Hi everyone, my name is Shanalee Henry-Gordon reaching out to you on this platform on behalf of 26 year old Nesiakay Williams -a practical nurse whose dreams and ambition of becoming a registered nurse has been halted since October of 2024. Once a charismatic, caring, ambitious and intelligent young lady; Nesiakay is now unable to carry-out life’s duties as many of us are doing as she is diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis. Multi Sclerosis a disease that causes breakdown covering of the nerves. Multiple Sclerosis also known as “MS” can cause numbness, weakness, trouble walking, vision changes and other symptoms.
In MS, the immune system attacks the protective sheath that covers nerve fibers, known as myelin. This interrupts communication between the brain and the rest of the body. Eventually, the disease can cause permanent damage of the nerve fibers.
There is a test that Nesiakay needs to do, which should have been done already in order to aid in her recovery. This includes taking fluid from the spine – to be sent oversees for testing, in order for doctors in Jamaica to know how to treat with her situation. However, she is unable to come up with the funds to do so.
The first phase of treatment for Nesiakay comes at a cost of $500 000 jmd which only last for 6 months. At this time, we are unsure of how much follow-up treatments for her will cost.
She also owes the University of the West Indes Hospital $154,000 jmd in hospital fees.
Currently Nesiakay is in need of basic necessities such as diapers, food supplies etc.
Going forward, she may also require 24 hour care since she is not able to move around due to the fact that the nerves in her limbs have become very weak .
In the midst of all this she is required to go to the hospital quite frequently for check-ups. Owing to the fact that her limbs are weak and she is unable to move around at this time, each time that she has to be transported to the hospital she has to go by means of a charterd vehicle.
