Hi, my name is Aniya Burks, and I’m raising money for my mother, who’s fighting through a serious medical condition — and being failed by a system that refuses to take her seriously. She was recently diagnosed with a small intussusception — a dangerous condition where the intestines collapse into themselves, which can lead to severe pain, vomiting, and even life-threatening complications like bowel obstruction or tissue death. Despite her symptoms — vomiting, extreme abdominal pain, lightheadedness, and a “hardness” in her lower abdomen — she was sent home from the hospital. She’s terrified, in pain, and now trying to go back to work, even though her body is screaming that something is wrong. She’s doing this because she can’t afford to miss a paycheck. She’s trying to survive while being dismissed, ignored, and neglected by a healthcare system that often fails Black women like her.
