A Life Torn Apart – Help Vilārs Heal

— ENGLISH DESCRIPTION IS AFTER THE LATVIAN DESCRIPTION:

Es vācu līdzekļus cilvēkam, kura spēku ir iznīcinājusi dzīves nežēlība – ne viņa paša vaina, bet gadiem ilgi uzkrātais smagums.

Vilārs dzimis 1965. gadā Kuldīgā. Jau pašā dzīves sākumā viņu un viņa māti gribēja norakstīt. Ārsti domāja, ka viņi abi mirs un viņus ievietoja atsevišķā telpā, lai netraucētu citiem. Taču ārste Ieva Vater atteicās padoties – viņa izglāba abus. Šī žēlastība bija pirmais no daudziem brīnumiem Vilāra dzīvē.

Bērnību viņš pavadīja grūtos apstākļos – internātskolās, svešās vietās, šķirts no mātes.

A Life Torn Apart – Help Vilārs Heal

Paldies.

A Life Torn Apart – Help Vilārs Heal

— ENGLISH VERSION

I’m organizing this fundraiser on behalf of a man whose strength was stolen not by choice, but by the relentless weight of life.

Vilārs was born in 1965 in Kuldīga, Latvia. From his very first breath, life tried to take him. Doctors believed that he and his mother would not survive childbirth. They were placed in isolation — not to recover, but to die quietly. But a Jewish doctor named Ieva Vater refused to let that happen. That act of mercy set the tone for Vilārs’ entire life — a story of survival through the kindness of strangers and the grace of God.

As a child, Vilārs moved often. He spent years in an orphan-like internat school, away from his mother, dancing in folk competitions and trying to build a life from broken pieces. He later served in the Soviet army in Kazakhstan for over two years — alone, cold, and far from home. By his early twenties, Vilārs had already experienced more pain than most do in a lifetime.

He found joy in family. He married his childhood friend Lidija, and together they had two children — a daughter, Rita, and a son, Roberts. He was a devoted father, sewing his newborn’s diapers by hand because he couldn’t afford store-bought ones. But the family eventually fell apart. The pain of that loss lingered deeply in his heart.

Years later, Vilārs met missionaries from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He had been searching for God since he was a boy — and finally, he felt peace. He joined the Church, brought his family with him, and even served as a counselor in the Elders Quorum presidency.

Back then, in 2000, the Church didn’t even have a permanent location in Liepāja — members met in rented spaces. He helped build that spiritual community with all his heart.

But life can be cruel. Health issues, poverty, and years of physical labor broke his body. His back required surgery, which sadly made things worse. He is now unable to walk without pain. He needs a full knee replacement and ongoing rehabilitation. For the past three years, Vilārs has lived with constant suffering, often lying alone in his small flat in Liepāja, unable to work, unable to afford proper care.

A Life Torn Apart – Help Vilārs Heal

He receives a small disability pension from the Latvian government. It is not enough to live on — not for food, not for medicine, and certainly not for the medical tests that might give him answers. Every specialist appointment costs €50 to €200. He has been in and out of rehabilitation centers five times — without significant improvement.

His local Church congregation helps however they can — bringing food, covering medicine, driving him to church. But their resources are limited. And so, today, Vilārs needs your help.

I’m asking for $3,700 USD (~€3,245) to cover:

  • Medical tests and scans

  • Medication and rehabilitation

  • Food and basic survival costs

In addition, we are seeking €100–200 to ship a donated mobility scooter from abroad to Latvia, so Vilārs can regain some independence and leave his apartment.

I’ve known Vilārs through our Church for years. He’s never asked for help like this before. It breaks him to even allow me to organize this. But there are no other options left. His children are grown and distant, and there is no safety net in his country for people like him.

He once gave everything for his family, for his community, for his faith. And now, with nothing left, he simply asks for the chance to live without pain.

Please — if you feel moved — help Vilārs stand again. Your donation, your prayer, your willingness to share this means more than you know.

Thank you.
