My name is Dhivya, and I live in Abbotsford, British Columbia, Canada.
I’ve temporarily returned to India, to support my father who is undergoing treatment for stage 3 cancer at KMCH,
Initial Cancer Diagnosis – April 2024:
He was first diagnosed with advanced stage laryngeal cancer (SCC) and underwent complete radiotherapy with a few cycles of chemotherapy.
Severe Heart Complications from Chemotherapy:
Unfortunately, chemotherapy caused serious heart complications. He suffered SVT (Supraventricular Tachycardia) and had to undergo an RFA heart procedure. Later, he had a heart attack and required angioplasty and stent placement.
Tumour Recurrence After Discontinued Treatment:
While recovering from the heart procedures, a PET scan and biopsy showed that the tumour had started growing again.
Immunotherapy Treatment – A Mixed Response:
We began immunotherapy in October 2024. It worked effectively on the primary tumour, but a secondary tumour started to grow nearby.
Aspiration & Feeding Difficulties
He suffered from aspiration pneumonia, and began feeding through an NG tube, then a PEG tube. He has lost over 25 kg and hasn’t eaten or drunk orally in 7 months.
Bleeding & Severe Breathing Issues:
He experienced heavy bleeding, persistent coughing, and worsening breathing problems due to the tumour.
Airway Blockage – Emergency Surgery Required:
A recent PET scan showed the tumour is blocking his airway. Doctors have advised urgent total laryngectomy (removal of his voice box) and permanent tracheostomy to enable breathing.
About My Father:
My dad is a kind-hearted, spiritual, and humble person who’s always helped others. Despite the pain, he remains strong and hopeful.
He believes with all his heart that after the surgery, he’ll be able to eat again and speak using an artificial voice.
