Hi, my name is Rebecca. I am a 41-year-old mother of 3. I have had a long 20+ year battle with my health, as many may know. I feel so vulnerable telling this story in public. I have had a total of 13 surgeries over the last 20 years. Throughout my life, combined with all the surgery, dental neglect in childhood, losing calcium during pregnancies, and brutal domestic violence in my 20s, my teeth were so loose I was barely able to eat and lived in constant pain. After many years of appointments and different dentists, I made the very difficult decision to have all of my adult teeth removed and purchase dentures.
For years, I have and currently experience DAILY bullying from adults (I cannot explain it). I have been denied jobs, uninvited places, and I am stared at constantly. I am almost always presumed to be a drug addict (NEVER TOUCHED HARD DRUGS EVER). This has taken a very heavy toll on my self-esteem, breaking down in tears many, many times. I have some insurance that covered most of the expense. I paid about $3,000 out of pocket. It took me 2 years to save up that kind of money. I was finally able to cover the remaining cost and have PAID OFF AND OWN MY DENTURES. I thought this was my chance at having a normal smile again, to feel more normal.
To my surprise, I discovered that I need one more surgery before I can wear my dentures. I have gone through my insurance and the procedure was DENIED and deemed unnecessary. I have had my dentures sitting in a cabinet waiting for me. It would take me a very long time to save up $2,000 (the cost of the outpatient surgery).
