Hi everyone,
My name is Kayla Ibarra (they/she), and I’m reaching out for support as I continue recovering from a major abdominal surgery I had in November. Doctors removed a teratoma tumor that, while mostly benign, did contain small amounts of cancer. I’m incredibly grateful it was caught—and removed—but my healing journey isn’t over yet.
Right now, I’m still in recovery. That includes ongoing checkups to monitor for new tumor development and physical therapy for a slower-than-expected healing process. I’m doing everything I can to take care of myself while juggling a part-time job, gig work when I’m able, and applying for a more sustainable job to support myself long-term.
But the bills are piling up—and despite having good insurance, it’s still more than I can manage. I’ve been meaning to write this for a while, but I’ve been focused on working when I can, resting when I must, and adjusting to this new body I now live in.
What I’ve learned through this experience is how vital rest truly is. And not just for recovery—rest helps me show up in my job, in my relationships, and for myself. Picking up extra work to stay afloat has been pulling from the very energy I need to heal.
That’s why I’m asking for help now. I’m raising $12,000 to cover the medical bills that are coming due, physical therapy costs, and essentials that will allow me to rest, recover, and regain my footing. This money would ease so much stress and give me the space I need to fully focus on healing.
I’ve been held by the love of my community in ways I’ll never forget—through meal prepping, help around the house, care, laughter, and presence. I am so lucky to be this loved. What I’m not, unfortunately, is financially stable enough to carry this on my own. So I’m asking for help.
If you’re able to donate, thank you. If not, sharing this campaign means the world, too. Thank you for helping me take care of myself—and thank you for being part of my recovery.
With love and deep gratitude,
Kayla
