Help Riley Zmick Heal: Support Her Life-Changing Brain Surgery
Hi, my name is Sara Zmick, and I’m reaching out with a mother’s heart full of hope and vulnerability.
My beautiful daughter, Riley Zmick, just 16 years old, is scheduled to undergo decompression surgery on June 30th, 2025 to treat a serious neurological condition called Chiari 1 Malformation, complicated by Klippel-Feil Syndrome affecting her C2 and C3 vertebrae.
For those unfamiliar, Chiari 1 Malformation is a condition where the lower part of the brain (the cerebellar tonsils) extends into the spinal canal. It can cause:
– Severe headaches and neck pain
– Dizziness and balance issues
– Breathing or swallowing difficulties
– Neurological symptoms that affect daily life
In Riley’s case, this is further complicated by Klippel-Feil Syndrome — a rare spinal condition that causes some of the bones in her neck to be fused together. This makes the surgery more complex, and the risks more significant.
Why We Need Your Help
After months of consultations, imaging, and expert opinions, her neurosurgical team confirmed that decompression surgery is her best — and only — option to relieve the pressure on her brain and prevent further neurological damage.
As we prepare for this surgery, the financial challenges are growing. We are doing everything we can, but we can’t do it alone. This fundraiser will help cover:
– Medical expenses not fully covered by insurance
– Travel, food, and lodging during her hospital stay
– Lost income as I take time off work to care for her
Our Goal
We are hoping to raise any money to ease the burden and ensure Riley gets the care she needs. Every dollar helps us take one more step toward healing.

With gratitude,
Sara Zmick
