Hello. I am a truck driver and my wife is retired. Last year, I was injured on the job and out of work for half the year. The amount of workers’ compensation I brought in every month was not enough for our mortgage alone. I went into an assistance program to put payments on hold. I maxed out credit cards for groceries and monthly utilities. After knee surgery and rehab, I went back to driving for the same company and lost my job after one month due to an accident that was not my fault, nor was I cited. I did, however, have a fractured rib. So, I started driving for another company, but with bad weather all winter, I wasn’t making enough to catch up or even pay current bills.
Spring came, business picked up, and we were paying the mortgage and bills on time (mostly). Then, one night, my wife lost vision in one eye at the dinner table. She felt off, and I suspected a stroke, so we rushed to the ER. They were lackadaisical, to say the least. They ran a few tests, told us it was not a stroke, and sent us home with an eye doctor appointment 1 1/2 hours away. The next day, I took off work to drive her to the appointment, and after 30 minutes, the ophthalmologist said it WAS a stroke and to go to the ER down the road. As soon as we walked in, they rushed around like fire ants. They informed my wife she had several strokes and may never see out of the one eye again. More tests and four days later, I brought her home.
Now these bills are rolling in, so I am breaking down to ask for help. I hate seeing my wife cry because she can’t see out of one eye or because bills are more than our income. I’ve already cashed out what little I had in my 401K when our septic fell apart. I’m still working and looking for other employment that will pay better. I don’t even have health insurance for myself because we can’t afford it. So, if you are able to help, we will be grateful, and I hope God blesses you in return.
