Help Our Daughter Get Lifesaving Eating Disorder Treatment
We are a working family facing a heartbreaking reality: our teenage daughter is battling a life-threatening eating disorder, and the care she urgently needs is being denied by our insurance.
Our daughter has been struggling with anorexia, low self-worth, and crippling self-image issues for the past 18 months. Last summer, before her junior year of high school, she entered a Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and later an Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP). Insurance coverage constantly shifted—one week covering her care, the next denying it. Still, she pushed forward, and we stood by her every step of the way.
Throughout her junior year, I left work daily to sit with her at lunch, helping her through each bite. Despite all efforts, her condition worsened. Just before homecoming, she was admitted to a behavioral health hospital after revealing she believed she was a burden and that we’d be better off without her. That was the scariest moment of our lives.
Thanks to intensive care, she stabilized and even made it to homecoming. But after spring break, she relapsed—and her team of doctors unanimously recommended residential treatment.
We finally found a residential facility in-network, only for our insurance to deny coverage, even after physician-to-physician reviews. Their reason? “Not medically necessary.” Her entire care team disagrees.
We are devastated. The help exists. But we can’t reach it.
Residential treatment costs $1,600–$3,000 per day. As public servants, this is completely out of reach for our family. We want nothing more than to help our daughter recover before her illness becomes even more dangerous.
We are sharing this anonymously to protect our daughter’s privacy. This isn’t easy to ask—but we are asking. If you have a daughter, a sister, a friend who has struggled… if you’ve ever loved someone fighting a mental illness… please help us give her a chance.
