Aloha family & friends,
On March 3rd, our daughters, Serenity, 19, and Amina, 14, got into a life-threatening car accident. We are thankful that they survived the accident and are with us today. Unfortunately, they both suffered injuries and are currently recovering.
Serenity recently graduated from Hawaii National Guard Youth Challenge Academy and was in the process of studying for her ASVAB test as she plans to proudly serve our country in the US Army. Unfortunately, Serenity suffered a Chance fracture, also known as the seatbelt fracture. With the impact of the crash and deployment of the airbags, her ligaments and tendons were torn around her fractured spine, which was nearly snapped in half. It resulted in her lower back spine fracturing, and she had to undergo surgery. She successfully had screws inserted to help fuse her spine, which requires extra care due to its critical state. She currently wears a back brace 24/7 and needs assistance with her daily activities such as eating, dressing, and using the bathroom. It is projected that her spine will fuse together within 3 months, but she will need further hospital care, including rehab therapy.
Amina is our youngest daughter and was with her sister along with 3 other passengers during this accident. She was asleep during the accident and recalls waking up with the paramedics carrying her from the site. As a result, she had mild brain trauma due to a concussion, and broken nose & cheekbones. She will be seeing an Oral & Maxillofacial surgeon who will be monitoring her recovery.
As the bills start to come in, the driver is unresponsive. Unfortunately, we have uncovered that the driver’s car does not have proper papers or insurance. We’re overwhelmed that their insurance doesn’t cover all expenses, which means we will be facing out-of-pocket expenses for the hospital treatment. As our family works together to help care for our daughters, we are unable to fully work enough to pay for past and future treatments.
During this difficult time, our Ohana humbly thanks you for your continued prayers and donations for their road to recovery.
